This short story does so well with capturing a moment, a feeling, and an era, and that’s one of the reasons we liked it. Me personally? I love the “fruit” motif: cherry, orange, peach, etc. The fruit motif echoes one of the characters’ comments about endings being beginnings, one of the themes of this piece. After all…fruits are wombs, so to speak, and these kids are about to be born…into the rest of their lives knowing that, to quote Sting, they’ve got “tombstones on their backs.”

Really nice work.

A transporting story — full of color and atmosphere. I loved the surreal dialogue aimed at making sense of an event that cannot be deciphered.

That was awesome, Cyn. You have such an uncanny ability to transport a person completely, not just to another place, but into an entirely new consciousness. Great story.
