I, too, enjoy reading and studying about the Civil War. Some of the most interesting stories are the stories behind the events, such as the one Mr. Beck presents. He's certainly right in implying that the war was really one of attrition; the South had no chance against the resources the North brought to the fight. R.E. Lee had that epiphany when he entered Pennsylvania for the Gettysburg Campaign. Seeing the acres and acres of unscathed farms and mutlitudes of young men who had still never served a day of military duty told him he needed to get this thing over quickly if the South was to have any chance. Being that the morale and confidence of his army was at an all-time high while that of "those people" across the lines was at an all-time low, he thought this was his opportunity to finish the war. Fortunately, for our country, "those people" believed in the Union moreso than he thought and put up a tougher fight than he anticipated.

Nice story, but the details about what happen to Stonewall are wrong. He was shot by an entire regiment not just one sentry. I doubt they ever knew who fired the exact shots that hit him. He was hit by more than one bullet.

My Dad used to read a lot about the Civil War, so it's no surprise that I have a soft spot, especially for fiction, set during the event. What I liked most about Gary's story, though, was the simplicity of its language. Far too often, a story set during this time period is also heavily riddled with wording and dialogue that, while appropriate to the time, just makes the thing a chore to read. I love how Gary suggests the language of the time with a few words here and there but doesn't overdo it. Well done.
